Game Report: Giants Prove Too Strong For Airs

The Mike Pero Nelson Giants have opened the new Sal's NBL season with a solid 93-78 win against the Taranaki Steelformers Mountainairs.

Played in front of an energetic home crowd, the Giants used a 25-14 third quarter to open what proved to be a game-winning gap.

The first half was an extremely tight affair as both teams traded baskets amongst a plethora of highlights.

Played in good spirits, neither team gave an inch as the battle at both ends delivered a tough affair.

Duelling guards Jordair Jett (17pts, 7ast) and Derone Raukawa (16pts, 6ast) proved a handful for each other, both showing a turn of speed that led to a number of hard drives to the basket.

Daniel Grida (Giants) and Chris Early (Airs) landed some big baskets at critical times, while Giants skipper Sam Dempster reminded everyone of his enormous value to his team.

Of concern for the visitors was Daniel Gomis' return of 5pts, which came via just the one shot attempt along with three makes from the charity stripe.

Rhys Vague (21pts, 9rbs) led all scorers and was the worthy winner of the Sal's Pizza MVP, while his four fellow starters all reached double-digits in a pleasing first-up sign for new coach Mike Fitchett.

Despite the loss there was a lot to like about the Mountainairs, who will no doubt be better for the run. If not for a lapse during the third period, they were right in this game.

Best for the Airs was Chris Early (18pts).
