Jets / Airs vs Giants Games Cancelled Due To Extreme Weather And Flooding

The Sal's NBL advises that due to an extreme weather event and major flooding across the top of the South Island the games between the Manawatu Jets vs Nelson Giants (Sunday 5pm) and Taranaki Airs vs Nelson Giants (was recheduled to Monday 7:30pm) have both been cancelled.

With the City of Nelson currently isolated due to severe flooding, and Air New Zealand cancelling multiple flights, the Giants team is currently unable to tavel out of Nelson, Blenheim or Christchurch airports, or connect with the ferry in Picton to Wellington.

"It is unfortunate we have had to cancel both games, we apologise to all of our partners, fans and viewers, I know all three teams are gutted they couldn't step on court to complete their respective seasons," said League GM Justin Nelson.

"Since about 9pm last night the Giants and League have been working overtime to try and find solutions to get them to the North Island, but mother nature doesn't want to play ball with us unfortunately.

"The conditions across the top of the South Island have considerably worsened today and the Giants find themselves isolated, along with their community.

"Right now Nelson and many other regions are flooded and isolated, most of if not all flights have been cancelled, and the weather outlook isn't great. We hope everyone throughout the region stays safe and looks after each other."

With the games not having an impact on the 2021 Final 4 the League advises neither clash will be rescheduled.

"Given these are two of the last few games of the regular season, and with the Final 4 being held later this week, plus as it is neither game impacts on the Final 4, we have reluctantly decided to cancel both fixtures.

"I can assure everyone we have done everything possible to proceed, and I know all three teams wanted to treat their fans to some entertainment to finish the season, but this one is out of our control and given the timing of the season we are now unable to rechedule both games," Nelson added.

It is expected the League will split the points between both teams in each game respectively.

Tonight's games betweem the Auckland Huskies vs Wellington Saints and Otago Nuggets vs Canterbury Rams will both be played and broadcast live on Sky Sport.
