Media8 Sports, a prominent sports media company headquartered on the Gold Coast Australia, has announced its acquisition of the Taranaki Airs, a professional basketball team based in New Plymouth. This strategic move marks a significant milestone for both Media8 and the Taranaki Airs, bringing fresh opportunities for growth, collaboration, and a renewed vision for the team's future.

The Taranaki Airs, known for their passionate fan base and strong presence in the New Zealand National Basketball League (NZ NBL), have been a staple of Kiwi basketball since their inception. Media8's acquisition of the team is set to bolster the Airs' prominence in the league, as well as create exciting new avenues for fans and sponsors alike.

"We are thrilled to welcome the Taranaki Airs into the Media8 family," said Brett McCallum, CEO at Media8.

"This acquisition represents a dynamic synergy between sports media and professional basketball, allowing us to deliver a comprehensive sports entertainment experience to fans in New Zealand and beyond. We are dedicated to preserving the team's legacy while exploring innovative ways to elevate its profile.”

Airs General Manager Cole Brown says the acquisition is huge for Taranaki.

“It’s an exciting time for basketball in the region. Media8 bring a wealth of expertise and substantially increase our capability to deliver a great match day experience. Having Chris [Ansty] involved elevates our basketball program and connects us with an international network of people, players and coaches. Interest in sponsorship has increased and we will be unveiling new membership packages shortly,” said Brown.

General Manager of Leagues Maree Taylor is excited about Media8 coming on board and continuing to elevate basketball in the Taranaki region.

“This acquisition is a testament to the remarkable growth and potential of basketball in New Zealand. It exemplifies the great strides our league has taken and reflects the increasing interest and passion for the game within our borders and in the global basketball marketplace,” said Taylor.

“The Sal's NBL is excited to work hand-in-hand with Media8 to continue nurturing the growth of the sport, providing exciting opportunities for players, and delivering thrilling basketball action to fans in the Taranaki region and across the country.”
