Smith back in familiar colours for 2021 season

The League is excited to announce the Canterbury Rams have re-signed Sam Smith for the 2021 Sal’s NBL Season.

Sam is no stranger to Canterbury Rams fans. He was instrumental in the Rams' trip to the semi-finals in last year's Sal’s NBL Showdown. The club is looking forward to having Smith back in red and black this season.

After spending his high school years in Tauranga, Smith moved to Christchurch. Here, he played for Lincoln University, the Canterbury Under 19 Representative Men’s team and was also a part of the Canterbury Rams squad. In 2014, he continued his studies and basketball career through a US College scholarship at Brown Mackie College, before moving on to Texas Wesleyan University to complete his degree. Since returning to Christchurch from the US, Smith has begun a career in the finance sector.

Rams Head Coach Mick Downer commented on Smith saying “Our Rams team is really looking forward to Sam returning this season and continuing to perform for the club. In the best possible way, we describe Sam as our teams Swiss Army Knife. An all-rounder that can be called upon to do the job at both ends of the court, play multiple positions and has a versatile skill set.”

Smith joins already signed Rams players including Taylor Britt, Joe Cook-Green, Jack Salt, Quintin Bailey, Deshon Taylor & EJ Singler.  Look out for upcoming Rams player signings in the coming weeks.
