NBL Game Review Commissioner Findings

The Sal's National Basketball League Games Review Commissioner (GRC) has reviewed two incidents from games that took place in the previous week of play.

The first incident occurred during a game between the Canterbury Rams and Otago Nuggets, on April 20th in Christchurch, and involved Tohi Smith-Milner of the Rams and Jaylen Sebree of the Nuggets.

In the fourth quarter of the game, after a shot was released, Smith-Milner initiated a box out of Jaylen Sebree to which he reacted with physical contact in response. A normal foul was called on Smith-Milner and a unsportsmanlike foul on Sebree. Following the game the incident was reported by the Rams as a punch to the head, to be reviewed by the GRC

Upon reviewing all the evidence the GRC was not satisfied that Mr. Sebree (Nuggets 42) punched the head of Mr. Smith-Milner (Rams 18) and therefore the complaint was not made out. The GRC agreed with the Referee’s description and, following a warning to Jaylen Sebree,  does not believe that any further action is warranted.

The second incident to be reviewed was the disqualification of Carlin Davison during the game between the Taranaki Airs and the Auckland Tuatara in New Plymouth on April 21st.

Davison received a personal foul with 1:48 remaining in the third quarter then subsequently received his second technical foul of the game, resulting in his ejection, for disputing the call.

Following review of all the evidence the GRC found that the conduct in question does warrant a sanction beyond the disqualification from the game due to the nature of the dissent. Namely Airs player Mr Carlin Davison has committed a classifiable offence, pursuant to the NBL Tribunal Policy ‘Excessive disputing of a game official decision or offensive or abusive language towards a game official’ resulting in a fixed financial penalty for a 1st offence which comes with a $500 fine, which has been reduced with an early plea to  $250.

The league considers that these matters are now concluded with all players available for all team activities moving forward.
