Rules Explained: MVP Voting System

The Sal’s NBL introduced its MVP Voting System ahead of the 2019 season. That same system remains in place for 2025.

The MVP Voting System is designed to identify the 10 best performers across the regular season, as determined by the Head Coaches. From there, the Head Coaches carry the greatest weight in the final outcome, but are joined by five independent panel members—each of whom has attended the vast majority of games—to ensure a well-rounded decision.

The system also promotes fan and media engagement by publishing votes after every game, together with a weekly Top 10 leaderboard.

How it works:
• After each regular-season game, the Head Coach or Assistant Coach from each team submits votes for five players.
• At least two of those five must be from the opposing team.
• Votes are weighted 5–4–3–2–1 (five votes for the game’s best player, down to one for the fifth best).
• All votes are published after each game, and a leaderboard of the Top 5 vote-getters is updated weekly.
• At the end of the regular season, the 10 players with the most votes advance to the final round.
• A 16-member panel (the 11 Head Coaches plus five independent experts appointed by the League) then ranks those finalists, awarding 10 votes to their season MVP, down to one vote for their 10th-place pick.

The five independent experts appointed by the league for 2025 are Casey Frank, Andrew Mulligan, Mike Lacey, Taylah Johnson, and Krystal Leger-Walker.
