Sal’s NBL Awards Voting Explained

The Sal's NBL MVP award is presented to the player judged to be the Most Valuable Player of the Sal’s NBL regular season (home and away games only; excludes the Final 6).

Across the 1 6rounds of the regular season, after each game the head coaches of both teams (11 head coaches in total across the League) submit votes on a 5-4-3-2-1  for players from both teams. These votes are collated to produce the season-long MVP Leaderboard.

At the conclusion of Round 16, the top 10 players on the MVP Leaderboard advance to the final vote, which is decided by a panel of 16 people: the 11 Sal’s NBL head coaches and five media representatives – Casey Frank, Taylah Johnson, Krystal Leger-Walker, Andrew Mulligan and Mike Lacey.

In the event of a tie for 10th place on the Leaderboard, all players tied in 10th move through to the final vote. Each voter must allocate their votes from 10 down to 1 (10-9-8-7-6-5-4-3-2-1), with 10 being the highest. If there are more than 10 finalists due to a tie, voting extends accordingly so every finalist receives a vote.

Should two or more players finish with the same total in the final voting voters will be asked to vote between those tied.

In addition to deciding the MVP, this same panel also votes to determine:

  • Coach of the Year - All coaches eligible
  • Defensive Player of the Year - All players eligible, finalists selected from a coaches vote
  • Most Improved Player - All players eligible, finalists selected from a coaches vote
  • Youth Player of the Year - All players aged 21 years or younger at season tip-off eligible, finalists selected from a coaches vote
  • Sal's NBL All Star 5- To be selected from the 10 ten MVP voter getters in guards and top 10 forwards/centres for a total of 20 candidates
  • Sky Broadband Rapid League MVP - Voted as per the  Sal's NBL MVP
  • Sky Broadband Rapid League All Star 5 - Voted as per the Sal's NBL All- Star 5
