Inclusive Round 2023 Announced

The Sal's National Basketball League (Sal's NBL) is thrilled to unveil the upcoming Inclusive Round 2023.

Scheduled to take place in June across Rounds 10, 11 and 12, Inclusive Round 2023 will see a dynamic collaboration between the Sal's NBL, Special Olympics New Zealand, and Wheelchair Basketball New Zealand.

This special event aims to shine a spotlight on the inclusive nature of basketball, emphasising that the game is open to players of all ages, sizes, and abilities. It also presents an extraordinary opportunity to honour the achievements of athletes and their contributions to their respective fields.

General Manager of Leagues Maree Taylor is excited to unveil Inclusive Round 2023 to celebrate basketball’s inclusive spirit and the accomplishments of our Special Olympics athletes.

"This event emphasises our belief that basketball is a game for every kiwi. Inclusive Round 2023 showcases the power of sports to unite and inspire, and we invite fans and players alike to join us in celebrating diversity, fostering camaraderie, and championing inclusivity in our basketball community and beyond,” said Taylor.

Special Olympics New Zealand Board Chair Al Robson shares the excitement with Inclusive Round 2023.

“Special Olympics New Zealand are incredibly excited to partner with the Sal’s NBL for this wonderful initiative. We look forward to celebrating our athletes’ skills and passion for the game of basketball over the coming month in such a positive and inclusive environment,” said Robson.

During this engaging event, teams from the Sal's NBL will join forces with athletes with disabilities from across the country, coming together in various ways to demonstrate the true spirit of inclusivity.

From June 8^th to June 25^th, fans and players alike can anticipate a series of activities that will ensure everyone is involved and inspired:

• In-depth training sessions: Sal's NBL teams will work closely with inclusive teams during dedicated training sessions before the round, sharing invaluable basketball knowledge and fostering a supportive environment.
• Mixed inclusion games: As a prelude to the main games, captivating curtain raisers and half-time showcases will feature inclusive games, uniting athletes from diverse backgrounds and abilities on the court.
• Spotlight on athletes' achievements: Throughout Sal's NBL games, special moments will be dedicated to honouring the outstanding accomplishments of these exceptional athletes, underscoring their dedication, resilience, and triumphs.

“From Invercargill to Auckland and everywhere in between, the Sal's NBL is committed to promoting inclusivity within the basketball community and beyond,” said Taylor.

“Inclusive Round 2023 stands as a testament to our shared belief that basketball transcends barriers, empowering individuals to showcase their talents and achieve greatness regardless of their circumstances.
