NBL To Observe A Moment’s Silence For Coach McKean

The Sal's NBL community will observe a moment's silence prior to all seven games this round in a tribute to Coach Steve McKean.

'Coach' passed away earlier this week after a short battle with cancer.

Prior to tip-off at each game the players, coaches and officials will line-up along the sideline and observe a moment's silence in the memory of one of the League's (and basketball's) most influential figures over the last five decades.

The players, coaches and officials will also be wearing black armbands.

Earlier this week the League issued the following statement:

On behalf of the players, coaches, officials and administrators across the Sal’s NBL, we extend our deepest condolences to wife Rachel, the family and friends of Coach Steve McKean.

Coach McKean was one of the most influential, passionate and supportive figures across the 40-year history of the NBL and news of his passing is being deeply felt throughout the League’s community.

We are especially feeling for our fans and the basketball community in New Plymouth and the Taranaki Mountainairs organisation. Coach McKean inspired so many players, coaches and administrators to work hard and be their best. He will be remembered for his incredible commitment to the game.

Even through his illness, Coach played an integral part earlier this year as a valued member of our 40in40 panel, where the best 40 players from the League’s 40 years were selected. His memory of players and stories about the stars of the League were both unique and incredibly entertaining to listen to.

The League has lost a great man, a valued member, a BBNZ Fall of Famer, and a much-loved and inspiring character. RIP ‘Coach’ Steve McKean.
