It has been confirmed late today (Saturday June 29) that the Supercity Rangers will be without their three best players for the remainder of the Sal's NBL season with Captain Venky Jois and fellow imports Nnanna Egwu and Tim Quarterman set to return home early next week.
Jois, Egwu and Quarterman did not join their teammates on a flight from Auckland to Christchurch late this afternoon and at this stage it appears all three will not play against the Rams on Sunday afternoon at 5pm.
The trio are represented by the same agent, Daniel Moldovan, who confirmed with NBL GM Justin Nelson that his players will not see out the season.
"I have communicated with Daniel and he has advised me his players will not be playing out the season and will be returning home next Monday or Tuesday," said Nelson.
"It's not ideal that the team's best three players are returning home and will not see out the season. The integrity of the league is paramount and once the season is finished we will assess the rules and the obligations our teams operate by, which must include ensuring that we are always putting on the best show possible for the fans.
"Venky, Nnanna and Tim have all been the ultimate professionals this season and delivered lots of highlights. Personally I hope we get to see them back in the Sal's NBL again in the near future," added Nelson.
